Oral Appliance Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

How Do Oral Appliances Work?

Oral appliances are the devices worn in the mouth while sleeping that reposition the lower jaw and tongue to help open the airway. This is accomplished by tensing the muscles that support the airway, which in turn opens or dilates the airway so air can freely move in and out without resistance or obstruction.

Oral appliances offer an effective alternative for individuals who have difficulty tolerating their CPAP.

Based on the patient's individual needs, one of our doctors will determine what appliance will best address the issues and concerns of the patient. They are able to provide options for patients that experience clenching, grinding, TMJ pain and headaches.

Our doctors are also able to treat patients with snoring that is not associated with sleep apnea. Patients with non-apneic snoring must have a sleep study to rule out whether they have a sleep apnea diagnosis or not.

   Advantages of Oral Appliances

  • Helps keep the airway open by preventing the jaw and tongue from falling back during sleep
  • Posterior support to protect the TMJs
  • Ability to manage teeth grinding
  • Freedom of jaw movement with use
  • Easily modified to accommodate dental work
  • Does not lock or hold the jaw in a set position
  • Improves nasal breathing
